McKinsey framework:
After the independence, PTV (Pakistan Television Corporation) was the only television network operating in Pakistan. It began its operations with the first live, black and white transmission on November 26, 1964, in Lahore. PTV centres were initially located in the five major cities of Pakistan including Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad, Peshawar and Quetta. With the emergence of new technologies and equipment, PTV had managed to begin its color transmission in 1976.
The transmission was restricted initially to 7-8 hours. But with the launch of Shalimar network (NTM) the competition had emerged for PTV which enforced it to enhance its transmission duration and introduction of special programs for children, sports & music lovers etc took place.
During mid 1990s, culture of satellite channels had spread all over Pakistan which pushed PTV to make some modifications in its broadcasted programs and the quality of transmission. For better coverage PTV installed multiple boosters in the far-flung areas of Pakistan and to increase its viewer ship internationally, launched a full-scale satellite broadcasting service in 1991-92.
Pakistani programmes are now being viewed in other parts of the world via satellite. Currently PTV is broadcasting programmes on national development, education, and mass awareness, and providing healthy entertainment through drama, shows, music, children and sports by strictly following the sensor policy. Its different broadcast stations are connected with each other through Microwave link covering about 90% of the population.
These upgradations were made possible through qualified and skilled engineers. Currently PTV is operating with over 6000 employees divided into 09 groups and every group has a separate pay scale. PTV has always been recognized for its state of the art dramas and to maintain this uniqueness, Pakistan Television Academy was founded in 1987 to teach students who wished to work in this medium. Employees have attended training programmes conducted by PTV Academy regarding engineering, news, current affairs, set designing and programmes production.
Now in order to compete with large television networks like GEO, ARY, EXPRESS, etc, PTV has recently launched its sports channel, PTV SPORTS. PTV NEWS, PTV HOME, PTV NATIONAL, PTV GLOBAL, AJK TV and PTV BOLAN are its different channels with have been recently launched to increase its viewer-ship locally and internationally and to compete strongly with the other existing network channels.
